Some mornings are meant for reading. Today the inclement weather begged me to eschew Forest Park and stay in my robe, guiding me instead toward my cozy recliner and West With Giraffes by Lynda Rutledge.
Loosely based on a true story, West With Giraffes was that rare book I read almost in one sitting. Rutledge’s storytelling transported me on a cross-country road trip that brought the first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. I tasted Texas dust, drove treacherous mountain roads, escaped grifters, fought hurricane winds, experienced sleepless nights, looked into giraffes’ eyes, felt first love, and cried as Woody’s tale ended. It was a lyrical wonder.
A day reading is never wasted.

Our local beauties with their little one. Prominent zoos like St. Louis are dedicated to protecting species against extinction. Their work is vital in saving endangered animals.
